About Riffle & Reel
A fly fishing gear site written for the first purchase, not the fifth — published by MadGrey LLC.
Why this site exists
Fly fishing has an entry problem, and it is not the money. It is the vocabulary. A beginner trying to buy a first rod runs into weight, action, taper, arbor, backing, tippet, X-ratings and denier inside the first five minutes, and almost every page they find assumes they already know what those words mean.
So they do one of two things: they buy nothing, or they buy whatever is on the end cap. Both outcomes are avoidable with about twenty minutes of plain-language reading, which is what this site is.
Every page here is written for the first purchase in a category, not the fifth. That is a narrower remit than most gear sites take on, and it is the reason the recommendations are decisive: when you know the reader has never owned a fly rod, there usually is one right answer, and hedging is a disservice.
What we cover
- [Start Here](/start-here) — what fly fishing actually costs, the full gear checklist, and whether a combo or separate pieces makes sense for you.
- [Fly rods and combos](/fly-rods) — what the weight number means, why 9-foot 5-weight is the default, and which outfits are worth buying.
- [Fly reels](/fly-reels) — drag, arbor size and capacity, and the honest answer to how much reel a trout fisher needs.
- [Fly line, leader and tippet](/fly-line) — the part beginners under-buy and regret. Line weight, taper, and the leader-to-tippet relationship in plain terms.
- [Waders and boots](/waders-and-boots) — chosen by water temperature rather than by brand, with sole material explained and the regulations that affect it.
- [Flies](/flies) — a starter fly box by region, what to use for trout, and a fly tying kit for when you get properly hooked.
- [Nets, packs and vests](/nets-packs-and-vests) — what to actually carry on the water, and the net that will not hurt the fish you release.

How we work, in one paragraph
We verify every specification at its source, score candidates against a rubric published in full on How We Choose, name one default pick per category, and state on every pick who should skip it. We do not run a test lab, we do not claim to have fished every product on the site, and we do not publish prices — fly gear pricing moves constantly and a stale number is worse than none, so every product links out to the live price instead.
Who publishes this
Riffle & Reel is published by MadGrey LLC and written by Brijon M.. There is no content team and no freelance pool — one person writes every page, which is both the limitation and the point.
Correspondence goes to contact@riffleandreel.com, which reaches the owner directly. There is no phone number and no shop to visit: this is a publisher, not a retailer, and we would rather say so than invent a storefront.
How it is funded
Affiliate commission, entirely. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases made through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. Every product link goes to Amazon under one Associates tag, which means the commission is effectively the same whichever pick you choose — so moving a product up a ranking earns us nothing. That is the structural reason the rankings are not for sale, and it is explained at length on the affiliate disclosure page.
We take no payment for placement, no payment for a score, and no free product in exchange for coverage.
